Gifted Unit on Origami and Sadako & the Thousand Paper Cranes Novel Study
Peace Day
2
In Chapter Two, you were introduced to Sadako's best friend and learned more about Peace Day. We will play Kahoot to test your understanding of Chapter One and Two.
Introduction to Theme
Watch the BrainPop video to learn more about theme
Take off / Touch down
There are many themes that are common in books and movies. Here are just a few..Which theme(s) have we read about in Chapters One and Two so far? Discuss at your table.
In addition to the themes that you discussed at your table, the theme of "Family" and "Tradition" is prevalent too in our novel. Share some specific examples of those two themes in Chapters One and Two.

Now, we will play Take off / Touch down. I will say aloud one of the themes mentioned above. If you've read a book with that particular theme, you should "Take off" by standing. If you haven't read a book with that particular theme, you should "Touch down" by remaining in your seat. I will then call on a few people who are standing to name the book and give evidence of that theme from the book. We will play several rounds, but first let's practice. If I said the theme "survival," all of the returning Target students should stand up. Why? because we read My Side of the Mountain last semester and should be able to give multiple examples of survival from that novel.
Independent Practice
Now, it's time to practice on your own. I will assign you work using the Flocabulary website. You will watch a video about theme, play a vocab game, and take an online quiz.
- Go to www.flocabulary.com
- Click "Join a Class." Your teacher will give you the class code so that you can join her class.
(I'm new to Flocabulary) (I already have a Flocabulary account)
Your teacher is now ready to assign you work that you will complete in class today or for homework. Again, you will watch a video about theme, play a vocab game, and take an online quiz.
