Introduction

In Japan, the crane is a traditional sign of long life and good fortune. According to the folk tale, if one crane represented a thousand years of happiness, then a thousand cranes would mean one million years of happiness.

Where is Japan?

Japan is a long archipelago, or group of islands.  The country contains 6,852 islands, although 4 large islands make up about 97% of Japan's land area. Japan is located on the Pacific Coast of Asia.

Japan is about the size of Germany or the state of California. Because Japan stretches across several latitudes, its climate varies. Northern Japan has a colder climate, while the islands of southern Japan stretch to the subtropics.
