Hurricane Force Home
Experiment
Directions
Today’s Objective
It is your job to design and build a home made out of everyday materials. The device must be able to rescue a puppy from our “sewer” within three minutes!
You Will Work Cooperatively to...
-
Design and build a home that can withstand a hurricane
-
Test and refine your group’s designs
-
Communicate the design process and results
Directions:
1. Plan:
Take inventory of what supplies you have before you begin brainstorming ideas.
Meet as a team and discuss the problem you need to solve. Using page 1 of the Student Worksheet, you will develop and agree on a design for your rescue device. You will need to determine what materials you want to use, then draw your design in the box on page 1 of your packet. Every team member should contribute to the team design. (Every team member will draw the final design after you finish the rescue.)
2. Construct:
Build your rescue device. During construction you may decide you need additional materials or that your design needs to change. This is OK, just make a new sketch and revise your materials list. (This does not mean you get additional supplies from me.
3. Test:
Each team will test their rescue device. Be sure to watch the tests of other teams and observe how different designs worked.
4. Evaluate:
Evaluate your team’s results by completing pages 2 and 3 of the Student Worksheet, and be prepared to discuss your findings withthe class.
