THE GREAT WAVE

The Great Wave or simply The Wave, is a woodblock print by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai. It was published sometime between 1829 and 1833[1] in the late Edo period as the first print in Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. It is Hokusai's most famous work, and one of the most recognizable works of Japanese art in the world.

The image depicts an enormous wave threatening boats off the coast of the town of Kanagawa (the present-day city of YokohamaKanagawa Prefecture). While sometimes assumed to be a tsunami, the wave is more likely to be a large rogue wave.[2] As in many of the prints in the series, it depicts the area around Mount Fuji under particular conditions, and the mountain itself appears in the background.

Task 1: Create a "New Wave"

1. Watch the following you-tube video to see how to draw the outline of "The Great Wave."

2.  Get a piece of white paper and draw your outline of "The Great Wave."

3.  Come up with a creative picture to make from your wave. Decide on what you want to add to your drawing of The Great Wave that will make it a different picture. Look at the examples below, but don't use any of these ideas.

4. Begin in class but you will finish for homework. Your wave must be colored also.

YOUR TEACHER WILL CHOOSE THE MOST CREATIVE, MOST DETAILED, AND NEATEST PICTURES TO HANG IN HER CLASSROOM!

DIFFERENTIATION: IF YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT ART METHOD YOU WOULD LIKE TO USE INSTEAD OF COLORING, YOU MAY DO SO, BUT YOU HAVE TO FINISH IN THE REQUIRED TIME OR FINISH AS HOMEWORK!
