Chapter 2:  A Hero's Welcome is Prepared

Professor Sherman is now well on his way to San Francisco.  The city of San Francisco is eagerly awaiting and planning for the professors arrival.  Many businesses are creating balloon-themed products for people to buy, and the town is busy decorating and preparing a parade for the professors arrival.  However, not all of the town's plans work out the way they anticipate!  Read to find out how they prepare for the professors arrival, and what problems they encounter.

What was Santos’s dream for aviation? How did he design and test his ideas? How did his approach to sharing his ideas differ from the Wright brothers’ approach? What were his notable achievements? Why did he regret some of his achievements?

There are many of scientists who came to feel the same way about their discoveries as Santos Dumont (e.g., Alfred Nobel, Sir Henry Maxim, Dr. Benjamin Spock, and J. Robert Oppenheimer). Choose a scientist to research. How was his/her discovery made and used? What did the scientist come to regret about the discovery and why?

  • Read Chapter 3  and be prepared to craft a detailed Reader's Response during our next class.
